300 Mbps is a strange tier. It is the entry level on many fiber networks and the middle of the range on many cable networks, which means two households paying similar money for 300 Mbps can own quite different products. It is also the point at which the question changes: below it you are buying capacity you might need, and at or above it you are mostly buying convenience.
That is not an argument against it. Convenience is a legitimate thing to buy. It is an argument for knowing which one you are paying for.

Yes. 300 Mbps is more than enough for essentially any residential household, including large families with several simultaneous 4K streams, multiple remote workers and gaming consoles downloading in the background. Nothing an ordinary home does at once comes close to filling it.

What 300 Mbps actually changes
Streaming does not improve. A 4K stream is listed by the FCC’s Broadband Speed Guide at 25 Mbps, and Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for its 4K tier. Video calls do not improve. Games do not become more responsive, because responsiveness is latency and latency is not sold by the megabit.

Two things stand out. The jump from 100 to 300 saves most of the time that is available to save, and everything above 300 is competing for the last few minutes. These times assume the source can actually send at that rate. Game and software servers frequently cannot, which is why a gigabit connection often downloads at a few hundred megabits regardless of what you are paying for.
At 300 Mbps, your own hardware becomes the ceiling
Somewhere around this tier the bottleneck moves inside the house. An older router, a device with an older Wi-Fi generation, or a long path through interior walls will all cap what any single device sees, regardless of what arrives at the demarcation point. A plan can be delivering its full 300 Mbps while a laptop upstairs measures a third of it.

This is where 300 Mbps plans differ most. On fiber, 300 Mbps is often symmetrical, which makes it a genuinely strong plan for households that send a lot of data. On cable, a 300 Mbps download tier may come with an upload allocation in the tens of megabits or lower, which is fine for most homes and limiting for some.

- Anyone whose current plan is priced above a 300 Mbps offer, which happens more often than it should once a promotional rate expires.
