The internet industry has spent two decades training people to believe that speed is the product, and that more of it is always better. It is neither. Bandwidth behaves like the width of a road: a wider road lets more vehicles travel at once, but it does not make any individual vehicle move faster. Past the point where your household is no longer causing congestion, additional megabits do nothing at all.
This guide explains what different activities actually consume, how concurrency works, and how to arrive at a speed tier that fits rather than one that flatters.
What things actually use
The numbers are smaller than most people expect. A standard-definition video stream consumes very little. A high-definition stream consumes a few megabits. A 4K stream consumes appreciably more but is still measured in low double digits. A video call consumes a few megabits in each direction. Web browsing, email, messaging and music streaming are all negligible by comparison, arriving in short bursts rather than sustained flows.
The activities that genuinely consume are large downloads — game installations, operating system updates, large files — and these are patience issues rather than experience issues. A game that downloads in twenty minutes instead of forty is more convenient, but it does not change how anything feels while you are using the connection.
Concurrency is the real variable
The right question is not how fast do I want my internet to be, but how many things will be happening at the same time during the busiest hour of a typical evening.
Count the simultaneous heavy activities in your household at its peak. Two people streaming in high definition, one video call and a game console downloading in the background is a demanding evening for most families, and it adds up to a total well inside what a mid-range plan provides. The plans that most households are sold provide several times that.
This is why the honest advice is usually to buy less than you think. Households with ordinary needs are comfortable on far less than a gigabit, and the difference between a few hundred megabits and a gigabit is invisible in daily use.
Rough guidance by household
One or two people, ordinary use
Streaming, browsing, occasional video calls. An entry or low-mid tier is genuinely sufficient. Paying for more will not change anything you experience. Our look at whether 100 Mbps is fast enough covers what that tier comfortably handles.
A family of four
Several devices, simultaneous streaming, homework, a games console. A mid-range plan handles this comfortably. The thing to check is upload if anyone works from home. Our guides to 200 Mbps and 300 Mbps show how much headroom those tiers leave a family.
Multiple remote workers
Here the specification changes, but not in the direction people assume. What you need is not more download; it is more upload and lower jitter. A modest fiber plan will outperform a large cable plan for this household. Our guide to internet for remote work explains why.
Heavy or specialist households
Very large households, home labs, people routinely moving multi-gigabyte files, or households where several people stream in 4K simultaneously. This is where gigabit and above genuinely earns its price. We set out when that is actually true in our looks at 500 Mbps and gigabit internet.

Do not forget upload
On fiber, upload matches download and the question disappears. On cable and DSL, upload is a fraction of download and it is the number most likely to constrain you. A cable plan advertising a very large download figure may pair it with an upstream that saturates the moment two people are on video calls while a backup runs.
If anyone in your household works from home, streams to a platform, or uploads large files, check the upload figure on each tier and treat it as the deciding number. It is frequently the only real difference between adjacent tiers.
Speed tiers, and the upload speeds attached to them, differ between providers and markets and change over time. Compare the specific tiers available at your address rather than general categories.
Your Wi-Fi is usually the bottleneck
This is the most important practical point in this guide. A very large proportion of households who feel their internet is slow have a Wi-Fi problem, not a bandwidth problem, and upgrading the plan will change nothing.
Wi-Fi is limited by distance, walls, interference from neighbors, and the age of your router. A gigabit connection delivered to a cheap router in a house with plaster and lath walls will feel slow in every room except the one containing the router. The fix is better placement, a modern router or a mesh system — all of which cost less than several years of a higher speed tier.
Before changing your plan, test over an ethernet cable, then test over Wi-Fi in the room where it feels slow. If the wired result matches your plan and the wireless one does not, you have found your problem. Our guide to checking your internet speed properly sets out the method.
A worked example
Consider a household of four on a typical weekday evening. Two people are streaming high-definition video on separate screens. One is on a video call. A games console is downloading an update in the background. That is close to the busiest realistic hour for most families.
The two streams and the video call together consume a modest amount — comfortably inside what a mid-range plan provides. The console download will use whatever is left over, and it will simply take a little longer if the rest of the household is busy, which nobody will notice. There is no point in this scenario at which a gigabit connection would produce a different experience from a plan a quarter of its size.
Now change one detail: both adults are on video calls simultaneously while a cloud backup runs. On a fiber connection nothing changes. On a cable connection with a narrow upstream, all three uploads are competing for the same small channel, and the calls degrade. The constraint has moved from download to upload, and buying a faster download tier will not fix it.
When to upgrade, and when not to
Upgrade when you can identify a specific, repeatable problem that is caused by bandwidth: video that buffers when several people are watching, calls that break up when someone else is uploading, downloads that block everything else. Upgrade the upload tier specifically if the problem appears during uploads.
Do not upgrade because a speed test returned a number lower than the plan says, because a single room has weak Wi-Fi, because a streaming service is buffering while nothing else is running, or because the price difference to the next tier is small. How to choose, in practice
Start with what you have. Check whether your current connection actually causes problems during the busiest hour of a typical evening. If it does not, you do not need more, and you may be able to save money by dropping a tier — see our guide to lowering your internet bill.
If it does cause problems, establish whether the constraint is download, upload or Wi-Fi before spending anything. Then buy the smallest tier that fixes the actual constraint. That is almost always cheaper than buying the tier the sales page recommends, and the experience is identical.
