When people shop for a work-from-home internet plan they look at the download speed, because that is the number providers advertise. It is the wrong number. Nearly everything that goes wrong during a working day at home — the frozen video call, the meeting where nobody can hear you, the file that takes forty minutes to send — is caused by upload capacity, latency stability, or the Wi-Fi in your house. Download speed is almost never the constraint.

What remote work actually needs
Upload, not download
A video call is a symmetrical activity. You are receiving other people’s video, but you are also transmitting your own, continuously, for the length of the meeting. A single high-definition video stream out of your house consumes a few megabits. That sounds trivial until you realize that a cable plan advertising a very large download figure may offer upstream measured in the low tens of megabits, and that the same channel is shared by every other upload in the house. Add a partner on their own call, a cloud backup running in the background, a photo library syncing and a child uploading homework, and a narrow upstream saturates quickly. When it does, the symptom is not a slow download; it is your video freezing while you keep talking.
Latency stability
Video conferencing software is more sensitive to jitter than to average latency. A connection with a consistent modest delay produces a smooth call. A connection whose latency swings produces the dropped syllables and robotic audio that everyone recognizes. This is why a fiber connection at a modest speed tier will out-perform a much faster cable connection on a busy node.
Reliability
For most jobs, an outage is worse than slow service. A connection that is excellent ninety-five percent of the time and unusable for an hour a week is a bad connection for professional purposes, regardless of what the speed test says.
How the technologies compare for remote work
Fiber: the clear first choice
Symmetrical upload removes the entire category of problems described above. Latency is low and stable, which makes calls smooth, and reliability is structurally better than copper or coax. Cable: workable, check the upload figure
Cable is entirely usable for remote work provided the upstream is adequate for your household. The mistake is buying a mid-tier plan on its download number without checking what upload comes with it. If you are the only person on calls and you do not move large files, cable is fine. If two adults both work from home on video all day, look at the upload figure on each tier and be prepared to pay for a higher one purely for the upstream. 5G home internet: better than expected, with caveats
Fixed wireless handles video calls well in a good signal area, and its upload is often better than entry-tier cable. The caveats are variability with tower load and the fact that carrier-grade network address translation can interfere with some corporate VPN configurations and any application that needs an inbound connection. DSL: generally inadequate
Upload speeds on most DSL connections are too low to support reliable video calling alongside anything else in the house. If DSL is your only wired option and you work from home, treat finding an alternative as a work expense rather than a luxury.
Satellite

The parts that are not the provider
Two changes reliably improve a work-from-home setup more than a speed upgrade would. A weak signal in a home office is a coverage problem first, so compare mesh Wi-Fi versus a Wi-Fi extender before changing plans.
The first is running an ethernet cable to your working position. Wi-Fi is the largest source of jitter in most homes, and a wired connection removes it entirely. If cabling is impossible, a mesh node placed in the same room, connected on the 5 GHz band, is the next best thing.
The second is configuring quality-of-service on your router so that video conferencing traffic takes priority over bulk uploads. Most decent routers can do this, and it prevents a background backup from ruining a client call.
It is also worth scheduling large cloud backups for overnight rather than letting them run continuously during working hours, which is a free fix for a surprisingly common problem.
Before switching providers, test your current connection during a real working day rather than at a quiet hour. The difference between the two results tells you far more than either number alone.
How much speed do you actually need?
For a single remote worker doing video calls, sharing screens and using cloud applications, a symmetrical connection in the low hundreds of megabits is comfortable, and considerably less will work. For two adults on simultaneous calls with children streaming, aim higher on upload specifically rather than on download. For anyone regularly transferring very large files — video editors, photographers, engineers working with large datasets — upload is the entire specification and fiber is close to mandatory.

Should you have a backup connection?
If your income depends on being online, a second connection on different infrastructure is worth considering. The cheapest version is a mobile hotspot on your phone, which will carry a video call adequately in an emergency. The more robust version is a low-cost fixed wireless plan alongside a wired primary, with a router capable of automatic failover. For most people the phone is sufficient; for anyone whose work is genuinely time-critical, the second line pays for itself the first time it is needed.
The short version
Buy fiber if you can, at a modest tier rather than the fastest one. If you cannot, buy cable and choose the tier by its upload figure rather than its download headline. Run an ethernet cable to your desk, set up quality-of-service on the router, and move backups to overnight. Do those things and the connection stops being something you think about, which is the entire objective.
