Starlink changed what satellite internet means. For thirty years the phrase implied a dish pointed at a distant geostationary satellite, half a second of latency baked into every request, a tight data allowance and a long contract. Starlink puts its satellites a few hundred miles up instead of twenty-two thousand, and that single change removes most of the reasons people avoided satellite internet.
It is not a fiber replacement and it is not cheap. But for a household with no wired option worth having, it is frequently the best connection actually obtainable, and that makes it worth understanding properly.
How low earth orbit changes the equation
Latency on a satellite link is dominated by the distance the signal has to travel. Geostationary satellites sit roughly 22,000 miles above the equator, which imposes a round-trip delay of around half a second no matter how good the hardware is. Starlink satellites orbit at a few hundred miles, which cuts that delay to something typically in the range of ordinary terrestrial broadband.
The practical consequence is that things which were simply impossible on traditional satellite become possible. Video calls work without the awkward conversational lag. Web pages load responsively. Most online gaming is playable, though competitive players will still find the jitter higher than on fiber. VPN connections behave normally. This is not an incremental improvement; it is a different category of service.
The trade-off is that a low satellite covers a small area and moves quickly across the sky, so continuous coverage requires a very large constellation and a dish that electronically steers itself between satellites. That is why the hardware is expensive and why the service took so long to arrive.
Real-world performance
Starlink speeds are good but variable. Downloads are typically comfortable for a household streaming in high definition on several devices at once, and uploads are considerably better than geostationary satellite though below what fiber offers. The variability comes from how many subscribers are sharing the satellites overhead in your cell at a given moment, which is why performance in a sparsely populated area is often better than in a semi-rural area where lots of people have signed up.
Obstructions matter more than people expect. The dish needs a genuinely clear view of a large arc of sky, not just a small window of it, because it is tracking satellites that move continuously. A single tall tree at the edge of the field of view will cause brief dropouts every time a satellite passes behind it. Weather has an effect but a smaller one than on geostationary systems. Heavy rain and snow can degrade the link; the dish has a heating element to melt snow.
Cost structure
Starlink is the only provider in this review where the hardware cost is a significant part of the decision. You buy the dish and router outright as a one-off purchase, and that upfront cost is substantial — considerably more than any wired provider charges for installation. The monthly service fee is then charged separately, and it sits at the higher end of the residential market.
Against that, there is no contract, no early termination fee, no equipment rental, and no promotional cliff. The price you pay in month one is the price in month thirty. For households used to the cable model, that predictability is worth something. And because the hardware is yours, moving house does not require a new installation.
Starlink has also experimented with regional pricing, with lower rates in areas where the network has spare capacity and higher rates or waiting lists where it is congested. It is worth checking what applies at your address specifically.

Data policy
Residential Starlink service does not impose a conventional hard cap with overage billing. Installation and hardware
Installation is self-service and genuinely straightforward: unbox the dish, place it with a clear view of the sky, plug it in, and it aligns itself. Mounting kits are available for roofs, walls and poles. The router is decent but unexceptional; a larger property will benefit from a mesh system, and Starlink supports running the dish in bypass mode so you can use your own networking equipment.
The dish draws meaningful power continuously, which is a consideration for off-grid installations running on solar or battery.
Who Starlink is for
The clearest case is the rural or remote household with no fiber, no cable and either no fixed wireless signal or one that is too weak to be usable. For that household Starlink is transformative and the price, high as it is, is justified by the absence of any alternative. Who should not buy it
If cable or fiber is available at your address, they will be cheaper, faster and more consistent. Starlink is the most significant improvement in rural American internet access in a generation, and it deserves the attention it gets. It is expensive to start and expensive to run, and it is not the equal of a good wired connection. But it delivers usable, low-latency broadband to places that had nothing usable at all, without a contract, and it does so in an afternoon rather than after a construction project.
