4K streaming has a reputation for being bandwidth-hungry, and it is the reason a great many households were sold plans several times larger than they need. The actual requirement is published by the services themselves, and it is smaller than the reputation suggests.
The interesting part is not the number. It is that most 4K problems happen on connections that comfortably exceed the number.

Plan on 25 Mbps of reliable capacity for each simultaneous 4K stream. That is the FCC’s figure for Ultra HD video and it leaves headroom, since Netflix asks for 15 Mbps. A 100 Mbps connection therefore carries about four 4K streams at once, which is more televisions than most homes have running.
If a single 4K stream buffers while nothing else is happening, the cause is not your plan.

Why 4K buffers on a connection that is fast enough
Wi-Fi. The television is often the furthest device from the router, sometimes behind a wall or inside a cabinet. Wired is better, a powerline adapter or mesh node is second best, and a distant 2.4 GHz connection is where most buffering comes from.
The app or the device. Built-in television apps on older sets are frequently the weak link. Streaming from an inexpensive modern external device often solves a buffering problem that looks like a bandwidth problem.
The service, not you. A single stream stalling while everything else in the house works normally usually means a problem at the far end, or a busy period on the service. Nothing you buy will change that.
Your subscription tier. Several services restrict 4K to their more expensive plans, and some restrict how many simultaneous streams you may run. People occasionally upgrade an internet plan to fix what is actually a streaming subscription limit.

A useful test: play the same title on a phone over mobile data. If it streams cleanly there and stalls on the television, the problem is inside your home, not on your plan.
4K and data caps
Speed is rarely the constraint for 4K. Monthly data can be, particularly on satellite and some fixed wireless plans. A 4K stream consumes several gigabytes per hour, so a household that watches in 4K every evening can move a substantial volume of data over a month.
