Ask a provider how much speed you need and the first question back will be how many devices you own. It is a good sales question and a poor engineering one, because a house with forty connected devices and two active users is a light household in bandwidth terms.
What matters is how many things are doing something demanding at the same time, during the busiest hour of a typical evening. Everything else is idle, and idle devices consume almost nothing.
Quick answer
For a household of 20 to 40 connected devices with a normal mix of streaming, calls, gaming and browsing, 100 to 200 Mbps is the right range, and 200 Mbps is generous. Device count only starts to matter for the plan when many of those devices are uploading continuously, such as a large set of security cameras.
If a device-heavy home feels slow, the router is the more likely culprit than the tier. Many simultaneous clients is a demanding job for wireless hardware in a way that it is not for a modern connection.

These are the FCC’s per-activity figures from its Broadband Speed Guide, which measures one activity at a time. The pattern is clear: the vast majority of connected devices in a modern home never touch the plan in any meaningful way.
A worked example: the 35-device house
Take a family of five with 35 connected things: phones, tablets, laptops, two televisions, a console, a handful of speakers, a doorbell, four cameras, a printer, and an assortment of plugs and sensors. Now count only what is active at nine in the evening.
One 4K stream at 25 Mbps. One HD stream at 8. A video call at 6. Online gaming at 4. Two phones browsing at a couple of megabits between them. Four cameras uploading a few megabits each. The total lands somewhere near 60 Mbps down and perhaps 15 Mbps up, in a house that a salesperson would describe as needing a gigabit.
Add a console download to that evening and the total spikes, but downloads are elastic: they take whatever is spare and finish sooner or later. The real bottleneck in a device-heavy home
Wireless capacity is shared time on the air, not a set of private lanes. Every device that transmits takes a turn, and older devices take longer turns for the same amount of data. Thirty clients on a single aging router in a two-story house is a genuinely hard problem, and it produces exactly the symptoms people blame on their plan: pages that hang, calls that stutter, video that drops resolution. The fixes are unglamorous and effective. Put the router somewhere central and unobstructed rather than in a cupboard. Add a second access point, wired back if possible, for the far end of the house. Move anything that can be wired onto a cable, starting with televisions and consoles. Retire equipment several generations old.

How to size a plan for many devices
- List only the activities that will genuinely run at the same time during your busiest hour. Ignore device count entirely.
- Add them up using the figures above, counting 4K streams at 25 Mbps each because that is the largest routine item in most homes.
- Add roughly a third for overhead and bursts, then choose the nearest tier at or above that total. Most families land at 100 or 200 Mbps, as our looks at 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps describe.

When more devices really do mean a bigger plan
There is one honest version of the many-devices argument, and it is about upload rather than download. A home with eight or ten high-resolution cameras uploading continuously, plus phones backing up photographs and a couple of people on calls, can exhaust a small upstream allocation without ever troubling the download figure.

Count activities, not devices. A normal home with dozens of connected things is comfortable on 100 to 200 Mbps, and the money that would go toward a larger tier is better spent on router placement, a second access point and a few Ethernet cables. The one exception is upload, which is the direction a device-heavy household genuinely can exhaust.
