The internet industry sells gaming plans on download speed, which is close to the least relevant number for the purpose. A competitive online match transmits a tiny amount of data: your inputs going out, the game state coming back, a few dozen times a second. The total bandwidth involved is trivial. What determines whether the game feels responsive or infuriating is how quickly and how consistently those small packets arrive.

This guide explains the numbers that actually matter for gaming, and how the different connection technologies perform against them.

The three numbers that matter

Latency

Latency, usually reported as ping, is the round-trip time for a packet to reach the game server and come back. It is measured in milliseconds. Below about 30 milliseconds feels immediate. Between 30 and 60 is fine for almost everything. Above 100 you begin to notice in fast-paced games, and above 150 competitive play becomes genuinely disadvantaged.

Jitter

Jitter is the variation in latency from packet to packet. This is the number that most often ruins the experience and the one nobody advertises. A connection with a steady 45 millisecond ping feels far better than one averaging 30 milliseconds but swinging between 10 and 90. Jitter causes the rubber-banding and sudden warping that players blame on the game server, when the cause is frequently the local connection.

Packet loss

Packet loss is data that never arrives. Even a small percentage produces visible stuttering, because the game has to guess at the missing state and then correct itself. Anything above a fraction of a percent, sustained, will be noticeable.

Bandwidth barely appears on this list. A connection with modest speed but excellent latency will out-perform a gigabit connection with poor jitter every single time. The only place raw speed matters to gamers is downloading games, which is a patience issue rather than a gameplay one.

How the technologies compare

Fiber: the best choice, clearly

Fiber wins on all three metrics. Latency is low, jitter is minimal, and packet loss is rare. It also offers symmetrical upload, which matters if you stream your gameplay while playing, since a cable connection can find its narrow upstream saturated by a broadcast and everything else suffers. Cable: very good, with a caveat

Modern cable performs well for gaming. Latency is typically low enough that the difference from fiber is not perceptible in most games. The caveat is evening congestion on a busy node, which shows up as jitter rather than reduced speed, and the narrow upload channel, which becomes a problem if you stream or if several people in the house are uploading at once. 5G home internet: playable, not ideal

Fixed wireless has come a long way and is perfectly playable for most single-player and casual online gaming. Competitive players will notice higher jitter than a wired connection, and performance varies with tower load, so a session at nine in the evening may feel worse than one at three in the afternoon. If it is your only alternative to DSL, it is a large improvement. If you have a choice, take the wire.

DSL: usually poor

Latency on DSL is higher than cable or fiber, and the very low upload speeds cause problems as soon as anything else in the house is using the connection. It is workable for turn-based and casual games and frustrating for anything competitive.

Satellite: depends entirely on the orbit

Geostationary satellite is unusable for real-time gaming. The half-second latency floor is imposed by the distance to the satellite and cannot be engineered away. Your home network is probably the problem

Before blaming your provider, rule out the far more common causes inside the house.

Wi-Fi is the biggest one. Wireless adds latency and, more importantly, adds jitter, and it is vulnerable to interference from neighbors, microwaves and cordless devices. Running an ethernet cable to a gaming console or PC is the single most effective upgrade available to most players, and it costs a few dollars. If a cable is genuinely impossible, use the 5 GHz band, sit close to the router, and avoid powerline adapters where you can.

The second cause is contention inside your own household. A large upload running in the background — a cloud backup, a video export, someone else streaming to a platform — will saturate a narrow upstream channel and destroy your ping. Quality-of-service settings on a decent router can prioritize gaming traffic and are worth configuring.

The third is distance to the game server. If you are connecting to a server on another continent, no local upgrade will help. Check the server region before concluding your connection is at fault.

How to test properly

Run a speed test that reports latency, jitter and packet loss rather than only download speed, and run it over an ethernet cable at the time of day you actually play. Then run it again during your worst period. The gap between the two tells you whether you have a congestion problem, and it is often more informative than either result alone. What to buy

Choose fiber if you can get it, and buy a modest tier rather than the fastest one — the latency is identical across tiers and you will not miss the extra bandwidth. Choose cable if fiber is unavailable, and pay attention to the upload figure if you stream. Treat fixed wireless as a good fallback and low earth orbit satellite as a viable last resort. And spend the money you save on an ethernet cable and a decent router rather than on a speed tier that will not change your ping by a single millisecond.
