Note how modest these are. A 4K cloud session at 45 Mbps is under half of a 100 Mbps plan, and about the same as two ordinary 4K video streams. The FCC’s Broadband Speed Guide lists Ultra HD video at 25 Mbps, which is the right mental comparison: cloud gaming costs about as much bandwidth as watching a film, plus a strict timing requirement.
Why latency, jitter and loss matter more than speed
Latency is the delay between your input and the response arriving. Jitter is how much that delay varies from moment to moment. Loss is packets that never arrive at all. Cloud gaming is sensitive to all three because there is no buffer to hide behind: a video stream can absorb a hiccup by playing from a few seconds of stored footage, while a game cannot store the future.
The practical consequence is that connection type matters more than tier. Fiber and cable are usually steady. Fixed wireless is often fine but varies with congestion and signal quality. Low-earth-orbit satellite is borderline and can work. Before subscribing to any cloud gaming service, check what its own network test reports from your home. A number you have measured beats a number a provider advertises.
The three things that actually ruin cloud gaming
Wi-Fi. A congested or distant wireless link introduces exactly the variability cloud gaming cannot tolerate. This is the single most common cause of a session that stutters despite a fast plan.

Background downloads. A console patch or system update running at full speed will saturate the link and add delay to everything else, including your session.
How to set a household up for it
- Use a wired connection for the device you play on. This single change fixes more cloud gaming problems than any plan upgrade.
- If wired is impossible, play on the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band, in the same room as the router if you can, and avoid the crowded 2.4 GHz band entirely.
- Pause large downloads and cloud backups while you play, or schedule them overnight.
- If your router supports queue management or prioritization, enable it. Reducing queueing delay matters more than raising throughput.
